Liberalism is an ideology that stresses the rights individuals have and is the most prominent belief system in the United States. Dr. Guevara explains in her first lecture that the liberalism ideology has four stages, each underscoring the common concerns and agendas of their times. First is Classical Liberalism, most known for being heavily influenced by thinkers of the Enlightenment such as John Locke, Thomas Hobbes, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Federalism is the division of people’s sovereignty between different levels of government. Abernathy in American Government: Stories of a Nation, â€Å"[divides] the people’s sovereignty between the nation and the states – they [are] coequals in power, each able to check the power and growth of the other.† This model of federalism was the first used by the U.S. and was seen to be heavily connected with Classical Liberalism due to the nation’s original, disconnected roots, which would come to change during the New Deal Liberalism period. The story behind the play is based on Miller’s interactions with his Uncle, a salesman whose efforts to obtain the â€Å"American Dream† and pass his success on to his two sons becomes his main focus. Slavery Before And After The Civil War Free Essays

In this chapter it tells a story about slavery before and after the Civil War. It explains the United States provision of slavery and how some people were misled on who ended slavery, how it was Abraham Lincoln and not John brown who was hung later in 1859 for his crimes. It later goes into graphic detail of how slaves were kept into slavery by whipping and separating families. It’s sad but true story of how black people were treated back then. John Brown was hung by the state of Virginia with the approval of the national government for his failed plan to take hold of the federal arsenal. The US Government would not accept an end to slavery by mutiny, but only under circumstances controlled by whites, and only when essential by radical and profitable needs of the North. It was Abraham Lincoln who was able to do just that by putting together the interests of the wealthy and interests of the blacks. What came next was that Lincoln was elected there was an extensive series of procedure clashes between the South and North. The rattle was not over the issue of slavery, but that the South saw Lincoln and the Republicans as a risk to their pleasant way of life. So when Lincoln was elected ultimately 11 states split from the Union. The Association was formed thus beginning the Civil War. In an effort to end the war, in September 1862, Lincoln announced his primary Emancipation Proclamation. This was a military move, giving the South 4 months to stop protesting or else their slaves would be freed, if they complied slavery would be unharmed in the states that came over to the North. The Proclamation also opened up the Union army to the blacks. On January 1, 1863, urging antislavery forces. Later in April 1864 Senate had approved the Thirteenth Amendment, declaring an end to slavery, and in January 1865, the House of Congresses followed. The Fourteenth Amendment declared that â€Å"all persons born or naturalize in the United States† were citizens. This restricted states’ rights regarding racial equality. The Fifteenth Amendment said: â€Å"The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude. † This opened the door for senate to pass laws making it a crime to deprive African Americans of their rights, like allowing blacks to enter into contracts and buy homes and what not. With these laws African Americans formed political organizations. They were nevertheless held back for several years by Andrew Johnson, who became president while serving as Vice President under Lincoln when Lincoln was killed at the end of the war. Johnson banned bills that helped Blacks and allowed states to return the Union without promising equal rights for blacks. Johnsons’ actions did not sit well with Senators and Congressmen. Later in 1868, Congress nearly succeeded in accusing Johnson but was one vote short in the Senate. Later that year, Republican contender Ulysses Grant would win the presidential election by 300,000 votes over Johnson. This again opened up doors for blacks, were being elected into southern state legislatures and the US Senate Congress. Black women were also helping to rebuild the postwar south; black children were going to school. Even though it looked like Negroes were on their way to becoming equal there was still a lot of hostility and dependency on whites for work and supplies. The south used economic power to form the Ku Klux Klan (known as KKK) and other extremist groups. It wasn’t long until things were almost back to where it started. What I have learned from the experience of being diagnosed is that, you can not force children to be interested in something they don’t like. When you pressure someone on something they don’t care about, it will only push them farther away. My art work is a resemblance of struggle, emotion, motivation , passion, incentive. Throughout my life I have gone through academic hardships and I strive to perfect my artistic ability by taking several art classes in order to improve my skills. I am my biggest critic; I make every effort to balance my compositions so they are appealing to the eye and use contrasting colors that capture the tones and shadows in objects. This essay consists of four sections, including introduction, effects of obesity, causes of obesity and conclusion. It will focus on the effects and causes of obesity. On the one hand, it analyses that two aspects of negative impacts which are death rate and chronic conditions are caused by obesity. On the other hand, this article discusses the complex reasons of obesity, which are classified as the congenital factors and acquired factors respectively. Effects of obesity Nowadays, increasingly, people have been focused on obesity bringing to serious impacts of health. The effects of obesity can be classified into two parts. One is the relationship of obesity and death rates; another is the relationship of obesity and chronic conditions (Tomer, 2011). It is claimed that the mortality risk and premature deaths are influenced by obesity epidemic amid American adults (Borrell and Samuel, 2014). Some data indicates 300,000 premature deaths per year are connected with obesity in America (Tomer, 2011). Furthermore, there is a school of thought that obesity is a main risk factor for many chronic conditions. There are known as the Western disease; including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease (CVD), certain types of cancer, hypertension and hypercholesterolemia (Rosin in Tomer, 2011). Let us now discuss two aspects of negative impacts. The relationship of Death Rate and Obesity There is a possibility that obesity will decrease individual’s lifespan by 3 to 13 years on average (Jimà ©nez, 2011). Mortality might be greater and greater when the obesity phenomenon becomes serious in the future. Over the past five decades, obesity has been related to morbidity or all-cause mortality which means death rates caused by diseases, except for taking dugs and suicide, in the United States and elsewhere (Borrell and Samuel, 2014). In group work, pressure on the individuals involved is inevitable. However, there are distinctions between therapeutic pressure as well as undue pressure. Therapeutic pressure results in adaptive anxiety. The mere presence of others will put pressure on each of the individuals in the group to behave in a certain way during each session. This is acceptable. Pressure is said to be therapeutic when it contributes to that individual’s resolution of what issues he or she wanted to be resolved. However, undue pressure enters a group session when the individual is no longer able to utilize his or her right to refuse certain aspects of the therapy or to stop at particular points of a task designated to him or her. (Corey et al, 2007) There might not be outright revocation of this right but rather a subtle coercion as a result of undue pressure on the said participant of the group therapy. Thus ethical boundaries are overlooked and the situation is no longer adaptive to the individual’s welfare and needs. In the case study (Herlihy & Corey, 2006), Ryan was unethical in the way he had two members of the group explore their feelings through role playing. Personally, I believe he was overstepping his boundaries as the group leader. Also, he was acting without thinking of what would be best for both individuals. I found it highly questionable that he asked Kevin, one of the participants, to role play by telling his intimate feelings about a member of the opposite sex. This task of disclosure without prior consent was a clear example, in my point of view, of how a group leader can sometimes abuse his moral ascendancy over the other members of the group. Also, the added task of having Kevin ask Linda on a real date and then telling him personal opinions about his girlfriend was very much out of line. As a group leader he should have acted more appropriately and thought of other tasks that would have been less demanding and less coercive in nature. The group leader, in this case, was most certainly acting unethically. He was asking Kevin to change by having him ask Linda out and by telling him speculations about his girlfriend. Kevin should have the decision on who he wants to ask out and on what he wants to conclude about his girlfriend. Especially with the task of the assignment, Kevin should have first been informed of the details before he was asked to agree to it. However, undue pressure made Kevin agree immediately and might thus have caused damage or trauma which the group leader was supposed to protect him from. Having Kevin confess his fantasies about Linda in front of the group may have also caused Linda trauma and psychological harm. Ryan should have considered what things Linda would find complimentary. Thrusting her in a situation might have caused her discomfort. Ryan’s assessment only of how Kevin felt afterwards was inconsiderate of the other member of the group involved in the activity, Linda. (Herlihy & Corey, 2006). If I were the co leader of the group, I would have intervened when Ryan asked Kevin to role play with Linda and again when he gave him an assignment. As a leader, one should always take into consideration the effect one has on the others in the group. The pressure one puts with such requests as role playing and assignments, should always be considered. Also, I would remind Ryan to consider the diversity of those in the group and to consider first that what he thinks would help Linda’s self-image might not be what she would consider to be helpful herself. I would most certainly have intervened and reminded Ryan that he was responsible for the psychological well-being and the lessening of the discomfort of these individuals as they exposed themselves to the activities of the group. They should not be placed in inappropriate positions wherein they are forced to divulge more about themselves than they are willing to. The first centre of discussion shall be in reference to a patient who I will identify as Mr X , to maintain confidentiality Nursing and Midwifery Council 2008) who came for x ray examination for his leg which was in plaster. As a student I attended Mr X with his consent and under the supervision of the mentor. Mr X stormed out of the room in anger after learning that I did not do the procedure right and another x ray was required. That would mean going over the process again yet the patient couldnt bear the pain. The second centre of discussion shall be referred to a nineteen year old Muslim female who was referred from the outpatient department to the x ray department for a head scan due to persistent severe headache. I was doing receptionist duties and I booked her in. She was wearing a religious dress code that covered from head to toe apart from the eyes. As it was against her religion, she refused to take off the cloth covering her head for the scan to be conducted. Before her examination she came back to the reception office to ask if she could get a private room for a prayer.   I gave her directions to a prayer room. I remember that I lost my confidence and I was very upset about myself for failing to handle the situation in a professional manner. The best way to react to clients anger is by listening and acknowledging it. Acknowledgment of anger is very important because the client will definitely calms down. There are proven ways to diffuse tense situations and control anger before it rises to the level of conflict. Empathetic listening is necessary in this case, listen to the patient and truly understand his or her feelings and their needs. It is a way of disagreeing, without being disagreeable. Listen empathetically to the patients distress and apologise without getting defensive. Honest expression means explaining to the patient that you acknowledge his or her frustration in being told to go over the x ray examination process again, but the patient should understand that you a future radiographer and students make mistakes. Students should bear in mind that, any hurtful things said by the client are as a result of his extreme suffering and they need time to work through their anger. Recent study suggests that, older people may use anger as a strategy for maintaining some sense of power over their own lives because as long as they remain angry or resistant, people will notice them. Walker et al (2004), as people get older, they are exposed to a wider variety of situations and are therefore less likely to find new situation stressful, though some older people may be resistant to change. The patient was in severe pain, so i would think he used anger and aggression as a pain coping strategy. Cowan (2000), anger is therapeutic in relieving stress. Hyland and Donaldson (year please) say, health care professional can reduce patient anger by providing the information the patients wants about his condition. So communication plays a very important part in diffusing tense situations. This experience taught me that, anger and aggression could be used as cover for deeper problems. Muslim women are required to cover their bodies as a sign of modesty. Interpretation of the Haddiths differ, so you may see other Muslim women wearing just a head covering whereas others may only show their eyes and they are not allowed to take off their head covering in public or in the presence of men. Henley and Schott (1999) state that some religions provide detailed rules, which may cover aspects of daily life such as prayer, and wearing of religious symbols. Therefore, members of the public and staff should acknowledge diversity and respect the differences within and between groups of people. Health care professionals should understand that each individual is unique and recognise our individual differences, Townsend, cited in Mackay et al (1998). These could be along the dimensions of race, culture, age and religious beliefs. It would be fair to say that, many of the problems faced in the work place around the issue of religion stem from a lack of knowledge and information about other faiths do and believe. They should have a deep understanding and a wider knowledge about a range of problems which arise from religious issues. In the provision of holistic care, both male and female radiographers should be always available on duty to meet the religious needs of Muslim clients and other religious groups. Failure to meet the religious needs of patients would be seen as discrimination on the grounds of religion. Organization Structure The United States Navy is an enormous organization spanning the entire globe. The chain of command covers everyone involved with the Navy from the President of United States all the way down to the eighteen-year old just checking into his first command. There are literally hundreds of different specialized jobs in the Navy all requiring different leadership styles and organization structures. Overall the entire United States Navy is based on a mechanistic organization with some variations throughout do to the wide variety of job fields. For instance my particular job field is one of the more technical fields in the Navy so we generally have some differences in organizational structure than that of the sailor painting the ship painted. I am currently working at the Fleet Area Control and Surveillance Facility (FACSFAC) located at Naval Air Station Jacksonville. FACSFAC as a whole is a mechanistic organization divided into two departments and several divisions providing basic functions ranging from things as complex as air traffic control to maintaining the cleanliness of the building. There is a Department Head over each department with several Division Officers reporting directly to them. The Department Head in turn reports directly to the commanding officer on all matters related to their individual departments. The air traffic control division is further divided into three sections of controllers that report directly to the Radar Branch Chief who reports to the Division Officer. Professionally the sections are managed in a boundary-less, team-based structure although militarily they are still run as a mechanistic organization.
